STINSON BEACH DISASTER CORPS

A community organization serving the town of Stinson Beach

The Stinson Beach Disaster Corps is organized under and takes direction from the STINSON BEACH FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT. The Disaster Corps’s volunteers promote disaster preparedness through communication and education so that community members are trained and organized to assist the local First Responders.

Because we are isolated from the urban parts of Marin County, it’s to our benefit to be both self-sufficient and also reliant on each other for our safety. In the event of a major disaster in the area of Stinson Beach, such as an earthquake or major wild land fire, the county emergency services may be overwhelmed and our community may need to be self reliant for days. Personal preparedness and a community Disaster Plan are essential to saving lives and property.

The Stinson Beach Disaster Plan has established 5 geographic neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has an Area Lead who oversees a group of volunteer Neighborhood Contacts. The most important aspect of a Neighborhood Contact’s role is to help prepare for a disaster by keeping a neighborhood record of properties, their neighbors, and any emergency skills and equipment that might be useful. During a disaster, the Neighborhood Contact will play an important part in the transfer of information from their neighborhood to the First Responders.

We encourage residents to volunteer for this community role. You will receive training and practice, and be provided with a two-way radio. No special expertise is required, but members will be expected to:

  • Participate in a monthly radio training drill

  • Assist the Fire District in larger annual drills for Tsunami, Wildfire and Earthquake

  • Have a smartphone and aptitude for learning new applications

  • You must be capable of doing a survey of your neighborhood on foot in darkness, inclement weather, or other difficult conditions
